Time Makes ‘The Case Against Summer Vacation’
David Von Drehle’s argument focuses on summer break for students, but touches on the educational value of travel: Deprived of healthy stimulation, millions of low-income kids lose a significant amount of what they learn during the school year. Call it “summer learning loss,” as the academics do, or “the summer slide,” but by any name summer is among the most pernicious—if least acknowledged—causes of achievement gaps in America’s schools. Children with access to high-quality experiences can exercise their minds and bodies at sleep-away camp, on family vacations, in museums and libraries and enrichment classes. Meanwhile, children without resources languish on street corners or in front of glowing screens.

I’m pretty late to summer vacation planning this year, but I’m not letting it stop me from getting a solid deal. Here are three often-overlooked things I made sure to check before finalizing any plans: Park-Stay-Fly hotel packages Airport parking can add up, even if you’re using an off-site long-term lot. If you hadn’t noticed, we have a penchant for shoes made in the US here at Gear Patrol. So, when Oak Street Bootmakers hit the web with yesterday announcement it was a perfect storm to win our lustful eye. Based out of Chicago, Oak Street was founded by George Vlagos to carry on the shoe making traditions garnered from his father James....
A passenger gets scanned in a body scanner. Ah body scanners. One of my favorite topics to write about (or hate on). If you have missed out on previous posts let me re-cap why I don’t like them: * They violate our privacy. Last week, Hilton announced that they would give their gold and diamond level HHonors program members a new perk: Free wi-fi. Umm, whoo-hoo? Other major chains have similar policies in place, but it’s only a nice elite perk because high-end hotels have such absurdly-priced internet access to begin with. My wife recently caved and paid $14.95...
If you’re like me, then your summer probably entails some degree of adventure. Last week? Whitewater rafting. Problem is, I’m also an information junkie and whether I’m navigating Category 5 rapids or just chucking gear into my SUV, there are lulls and in those lulls I must… check… email. To sheath my iPhone 4, I’ve...
