I’ve always thought “The Old Patagonian Express,” Paul Theroux’s book about his trip from the U.S. down to South America by train, was one of his best. I’ve sometimes wondered what became of the old train he writes about near the book’s end—the one he seized on for the title. It turns out, it’s still operating . The same starkness of place that struck Theroux in the high Patagonian desert remains. Like a photograph from an earlier era, the train and the landscape remain unchanged.

By Gear Patrol reader Amos Kwon On my honeymoon to Australia last year, we packed four bags of luggage. One was so heavy, it might have as well been carrying an anvil, locked inside a portable safe, wrapped in an iron sarcophagus. Worse, we didn’t even use half the stuff we packed. No more, I declared. So, this year, the streamlined Yak approach...

Comparing first class “meal” service on American Eagle and United Express
United has long had their “Explus” regional jets, featuring Economy Plus and first class, but starting next month American is joining the bandwagon and adding first class seats to their CRJ700s. Now, there should be no need to compare meal services as they’re regional jets after all, right? They shouldn’t be flying routes...
