The holiday season sometimes brings so much joy that all my hopes, at least for award booking, seem possible. And with a New Year, there’s an unwritten future. So I dare to dream. And I’ll share with you, my dear readers, the content of my five wishes as we close out 2009 and usher in 2010. 1. An end to United Starnet Blocking I genuinely believe that United Mileage Plus offers the best top-tier elite level. But their award redemption is truly sub-par. They block award seats that their partners are making available, something that no other…

An Eventual End to United’s Starnet Blocking?
At the Star Alliance MegaDO it was revealed that the Star Alliance website will be offering an award search tool to display award seat availability across the alliance. If Star makes member award seats transparent, it will be very hard for United to remain the only Star member blocking awards. The alliance itself will be marketing that you can find...
Continental’s Entry into Star Alliance Makes United’s Award Blocking Even More Untenable
Today’s Washington Time “On the Fly” column offers kudos to Continental for their transition to Star Alliance — offering liberal award routing rules such as flying from the US to Australia via Asia and permitting both an open jaw and a stopover on an award (though not permitting US to Asia via the Atlantic, though there have...

Join the cause against United’s Starnet blocking!
I wonder how many bonus miles United will give when the new “Stop United’s Starnet Blocking” group on Facebook reaches 10,000 members. Someone has also taken the initiative of starting a website attacking United’s Starnet blocking, which has a good description of the practice.  Read More →
Listen to Me Discuss Award Booking
I’ll be recording another session, but in the meantime you can listen to this week’s upgrd podcast where we talk about “United Airlines award levels, website issues, and evil StarNet blocking; US Airways award levels and availability; and Continental’s award chart and how they match up with United.” Give it a listen...
A Case Study in Starnet Blocking: Booking United Awards to South Africa
As many of you know, I probably book more frequent flyer award tickets than anyone else in the world . So I get a lot of regular experience dealing with a wide variety of frequent flyer programs. After Delta, United is my second least-favorite to deal with (Singapore is no bargain, either). All for different reasons. Delta just offers the least amount...
FTD 30 Miles Per Dollar Offers
FTD now offers 30 Delta miles per dollar , which is new. Of course, I prefer the ongoing offering of 30 United miles per dollar , as much as United miles frustrate me due to Starnet blocking . Delta miles still worth less…  Read More →
Tons of ANA first class award availability for early next year!
ANA first class award seats are typically among the hardest to come by. For months at a time you won’t see a single award seat, and then all of a sudden they’ll open up a bunch of seats, typically for early in the year (January-February). Anyway, it seems like they’ve opened up quite a bit of award space for early next year, with...
Noooooooooooooooooooo!
I’m trying to book a first class award seat for my mom for next week to Frankfurt using Aeroplan miles in Lufthansa First Class. One of the nice things about Aeroplan is that they don’t do any Starnet blocking , aside from a slight “issue” they have with displaying some Swiss award availability  Read More →

United’s Most Frequent Flyer: 700,000 Miles Per Year in the Air
Scott Mayerowitz has an ABC Travel piece on United’s most frequent flyer , tied to the movie Up in the Air (hint: Tom Stuker flies twice as much as Ryan Bingham), and writing about airline top tier elite programs like United’s Global Services and American’s Concierge Key. About Tom Stuker’s flying, Stuker has flown nearly...
