Hunter says Delta.com has gone off the rails . And he calls the Delta.com helpdesk “We’re a Bunch of Monkeys Chained to Phones.” Gee, Hunter is just realizing this. And he actually flies Delta . I do my best to avoid it, though in my case it’s because on Delta ful fare trumps status in the upgrade queue and the idiots treat cheap government fares as full fare. I live in DC, where everyone but me is flying on a government fare. But that’s beside the point. My beef with Delta.com is its award search. Delta occasionally publishes premium cabin international inventory for award booking without paying extortionate double or triple mileage pricing. But its website would never…

US Airways Increases Award Redemption Pricing January 6
Yesterday US Airways announced big changes to their award chart going into effect January 6. They say they’re moving from two award levels to four, in fact that’s wrong they’re moving from three to four. Currently awards on US Airways flights come at the off-peak, regular, and last seat availability pricing. The new system will...
Analysis of Singapore’s December 1 Award Chart Changes
The Global Traveller offers his analysis of the changes in the Singapore Airlines Krisflyer award chart that I recently mentioned. He reiterates my point about the value in 50% mileage cost for one-way awards. That’s a big improvement. The reduction in the number of zones on the award chart means some awards become more expensive. The Delta...
Reserve the Best Award You Can, Then Trade Up
One of the great things about United’s 1K status is that they let you make virtually unlimited changes to award tickets at no fee.  Delta’s top tier doesn’t quite let you do that, you get a limited number of free changes annually.  But free changes are great, and sometimes changes are worth paying a fee for. Something I’m...

A Mileage Redemption Wish List for the Holidays and the New Year
The holiday season sometimes brings so much joy that all my hopes, at least for award booking, seem possible. And with a New Year, there’s an unwritten future. So I dare to dream. And I’ll share with you, my dear readers, the content of my five wishes as we close out 2009 and usher in 2010. 1. An end to United Starnet Blocking I genuinely...
A Case Study in Starnet Blocking: Booking United Awards to South Africa
As many of you know, I probably book more frequent flyer award tickets than anyone else in the world . So I get a lot of regular experience dealing with a wide variety of frequent flyer programs. After Delta, United is my second least-favorite to deal with (Singapore is no bargain, either). All for different reasons. Delta just offers the least amount...
Continental’s Entry into Star Alliance Makes United’s Award Blocking Even More Untenable
Today’s Washington Time “On the Fly” column offers kudos to Continental for their transition to Star Alliance — offering liberal award routing rules such as flying from the US to Australia via Asia and permitting both an open jaw and a stopover on an award (though not permitting US to Asia via the Atlantic, though there have...
Delta Miles Take a Step Towards Becoming More Valuable
The Daily Yomiuri reports that Delta and Japan Airlines “reached a basic agreement on a comprehensive tie-up” that will mean JAL moving from oneworld to Skyteam. Japan Airlines has historically offered pretty good premium cabin award availability. I was on record saying that despite reports that Japan Airlines would jump ship from partnering...
Some more thoughts on Delta Diamond status
Some more thoughts on Delta Diamond status
Now that Delta has unveiled a few more details about their new top tier status, let’s summarize what you get for your 125,000 MQM’s or 140 segments per year with Delta: 125% mileage bonus (which Platinum members used to get) Free SkyClub membership (which Platinum members used to get) Priority upgrades over Platinum members A dedicated...
50% Bonus on Delta Mileage Transfers
Delta is offering a 50% bonus on transfers of mileage from one account to another by January 31. The most miles you can transfer at a time is 30,000 and the cost is 1 penny per mile plus $30. You can thus ‘buy’ 15,000 bonus miles for $330. Not worth it to me, I won’t ever do this for a bonus of less than 100% (which they’ve...
