The mileage run thought process

November 5th, 2009 admin

It has been over a month now since I’ve stepped on a plane for no other reason than to accumulate airline miles. I’ve been traveling quite a bit in the past month, (London, San Fran, etc.), but all with something to do on the other end. And oddly enough, I haven’t even thought about booking a mileage run. Economics aside (and mileage running can make economic sense if done correctly and you actually enjoy flying), I just haven’t been tempted to mileage run lately. It used to be that I needed to fly at least once a week, almost just like an addict. But …

The Economics of Airlines’ Mileage Addiction
This short Business Week piece discusses the importance of frequent flyer miles to airlines — selling billions of dollars in miles, using miles to good moribund bookings and launch new routes — and includes a couple of interesting statistics. I’m sure I’ve mentioned in the past, though flying accounts for a plurality of mileage...
United Mileage Plus Visa refer-a-friend
United Mileage Plus Visa refer-a-friend
The Mileage Plus Visa has a pretty nifty refer-a-friend promotion right now, whereby the referrer gets 15,000 miles and the person referred gets a 30,000 mile sign-up bonus. To take advantage of this offer one has to apply via phone at 877.858.5188 and mention code C7G4 , and there’s a limit of two referrals per person. I just got my first...
Great Mileage Expiration Policy Reference
The Global Traveller offers a pretty extensive review of airline mileage expiration policies . Like Kiwi Flyer, I was perplexed reading the February Inside Flyer cover story on mileage expiration to read that Singapore miles expire after 36 months of account activity. : KrisFlyer accounts which have activity are valid for 36 months from the end of...
A Mileage Card Can Earn Points Two Ways
Travelers know the importance of mileage card. It is where you can get the benefits of flying frequently. It is a way by which you can maximize your travel expenses.  Read More →
I’ve requalified for Premier Executive with United (and am tired)!
As soon as all the flights from this past weekend post, I’ll be well beyond 50,000 elite qualifying miles for the year. It’s not all that impressive, other than the fact that all my travel was domestic, which means I’m at nearly 50 segments. I’ve flown every single week, have far too many redeyes to speak of, and of course...
Up to 25,000 miles for joining Alaska Mileage Plan and flying one roundtrip
Up to 25,000 miles for joining Alaska Mileage Plan and flying one roundtrip
Alaska Mileage Plan is offering “Oregonians and residents of Southwest Washington” 5,000 miles just for joining Mileage Plan. They’re offering an extra 20,000 miles for making one qualifying roundtrip (any ticket flying from, to, or connecting in Portland that isn’t a “Hot Deal” fare) between February 15 and...
4,000 United Mileage Plus miles for Netflix
Everyone should sign up for Netflix at one point or another, if only for the mileage bonus. I hardly watch movies and am definitely not interested in actually keeping a Netflix subscription, but for the initial mileage bonus it’s definitely worth doing.  Read More →
It’s time to fly!
I might already be sitting at 300,000 elite qualifying miles for the year with United, but that’s no reason to stop. Thanks to the summer of bumps (which was much better than the summer of hell or the summer of legit crew shortages towards the end of the month), I have quite a few vouchers to use up, so I’ll be flying free for most of...
Some more about my latest mileage run….
I should probably apologize for my lack of posts this week. Lucky, my dog (yes, my online “persona” is named after him), has spent a couple of days in the hospital, but fortunately is starting to recover. He has always had health issues, but never as bad as earlier in the week. As it turns out he has a serious case of diabetes and was...
Podcast #82 – Changing My Travel; New Mileage Programs in a New Year
The way I travel has changed significantly with my New Year’s career change. Moving from consulting to the corporate world, I no longer bounce across the country. Instead, I spend a week in one of my company’s three offices. This has required a bit of an attitude adjustment with regards to travel. The new job also drove me to reexamine...
