  Cliffiside herds of mountain goats provide entertainment as the morning begins. I'd planned to launch our summit hike early but filming these fascinating mountain dwellers on camera became our priority. Much film time is provided in this continuation of our "Where The Air Is Thin" adventure (Part 2). Billies, moms, and kids open their morning grazing and foraging the meadow below and then move up to amazing some stunning cliffside areas as the morning progresses and more hikers move into the basin. Apparently the cliffs tastes pretty good to them as well too: salty mineral deposits high above give some needed nutrition (horn, hoof development). Allie the Mountain Dog is enthralled with our goats friends but I keep her nearby as we stalk closer for better footage. The deep blue sky provides a stunning backdrop to the talus mountains and our glacier as we capture the experience on camera. Finally we do a little camp maintenance, pack up the tent and bags, and then are underway for the hike. With a huge blister on my foot (pain) and Allie limping from left paw abrasion, I'm not convinced we can make it but we are determined to try. About 15 miles of hard hiking awaits us and we will hike until midnight.   "Witch's Hut" by Nutnfanc...
  With several thousand feet in vertical gain done on this day's hike, we had our work cut out for us. But the scenery and the specialness of the experience gives just reward. This hike is amazingly beautiful, traversing many quaking aspens, waterfalls, wild flowers of all kinds, conifers, montane forests, subalpine and alpine zones, and arriving in high altitude talus and rocky slopes above the tree line. My hiking companions once again on this Nutnfancy Backpacking Adventure are LastSuspect, my son, and Allie the Mountain Dog, our trained female black lab. Both hike strong without complaint which makes the hike fun. I include lots of hiking footage in Actual Part 1 to show both the work required and the wondrous scenery. Of particular beauty were the waterfalls and run off streams we crossed. But I don't let the scenery distract us from potentially dangerous portions of the climb. At one point in the trail, a snowy chasm above a stream that has eroded a tunnel underneath the snow field. This snow patch, the mountain, tunnel, and stream plunge steeply downslope with jagged rocks as a floor and a 2 ft high ceiling. If someone slipped underneath the snow slab into that tunnel, it would be a difficult rescue and hypothermia would set it in quickly. We navigate this section carefully and actually Suspect needs a fast helping hand there when he falls. We reach the high mountain basins and it feels good to find our mountain goats friends not too far off. I weigh on what I feel <b>...</b>

  The Summer Snow adventure sadly comes to an end but not until some more adventure ensues. Our hike out continues, crossing streams, snow casms, boulders, talus fields, fallen timber areas, and lots of snow and mud. The scenery continues as well and it was majestic. But the hike is tough, having taken a different route out that added about 3.5 miles to the route...all with no trail. Lots of snow drifts still covered it. The wind kicks up too, gusting to 30+ mph. We press on and I decide to stop at the base of a huge talus slope for a rest break. We heat up some lunch and filter some water out of a fresh glacial water source (awesome water!). LastSuspect has some fun boulder climbing while Allie and I do the work (standard). An osprey hunts the lake not far away and we bid farewell to the lake as we make our way upslope to re-intercept the trail. I break through a snow bank into a hidden creek, getting soaked. We are careful not to sprain an ankle or break a leg in this treacherous section. Pressing on through the many fallen trees and obstacles, we reach the open trail (and check out some other beautiful glacier lakes nearby too). Finally we are rewarded with some downhill, on-trail hiking...piece of cake but lengthy. Allie is a great companion all through it all and we love having her along. And yes, despite my best efforts, she throws another shoe to be lost forever. We grab out cached supplies on the way down and call the adventure complete. This was an awesome <b>...</b>

  "No Hurries, No Worries"...
  It's OK to do nothing once your up there! Actually you can be quite busy providing the essentials of life in the wild parts: water needs to be filtered, food need prepping (sometimes catching too!), and shelters need erecting and maintenance. In bad weather it's even more time consuming. But here in Summer Snow Part 3 I made sure we didn't get so busy that we didn't have to time to just relish our location and let it soak in. We do just that! Allie the Mountain Dog (our highly trained female black lab) and LastSuspect, my son, are great wilderness companions as we experience the high life at a high mountain lake. We saw no one else up there due to the deep snow banks covering the trails for miles. We toughed them out and achieved remarkable and treasured isolation. We show some water filtering with the Katadyn Hiker, the start of our fire making exercise for my son, talk about a few blades, watch Allie's antics, and enjoy the scenery.
