The Economics of Airlines’ Mileage Addiction

July 27th, 2009 admin

This short Business Week piece discusses the importance of frequent flyer miles to airlines — selling billions of dollars in miles, using miles to good moribund bookings and launch new routes — and includes a couple of interesting statistics. I’m sure I’ve mentioned in the past, though flying accounts for a plurality of mileage earning (base miles at least, not counting bonuses) it no longer accounts for a majority of mileage earning. Credit card spend represents about 20% of earned mileage.

Apply here . Act right away, because these offers seem to come and go quickly. It’s an incredible promo, well worth the $75 annual fee for the card. The way to really leverage it, though, is with British Airways’ family accounts. Say that husband and wife each apply, spend $2,000 on the card, each earn the 100,000 mile bonus (50,000 miles...
2009 — a whole new game for me
2009 — a whole new game for me
I posted my 2009 travel year in review in December, and mentioned that this was the “richest” year for me yet as far as miles and points go. The “game” really changed for me in the second half of the year, as I extended my hobby beyond just earning miles through flying, but also through basically any promotions I can take...
British Airways Visa to Increase Mileage Earning by 25%
Last month I posted about a new offer of 30,000 bonus miles for signing up for a British Airways co-branded visa from Chase. The card has a $75 annual fee. Effective November 4, the card will earn 25% more miles : 1.25 miles per dollar on regular spend, and 2.5 miles per dollar on spending with British Airways. Now, to me the card is really just...
Earning Almost Unlimited Free Miles Churning Citibank Checking/Savings Accounts
I’ve made some oblique references (and soe less oblique ones, it was my #2 way to earn miles here ) to earning miles by funding Citibank online checking and savings accounts with a credit card. Many times in the past I’ve been asked not to post about the deal by folks who were benefiting from it, the theory was that extra exposure was...
The Growing Importance of Credit Card Spend to Airlines, All Over the World
Earning points towards elite status via credit card spend is mostly a US phenomenon. But the practice is spreading. The Global Traveller reports that you can get halfway towards your Air New Zealand status with their Global Plus co-branded credit card.  Read More →
2009 travel year in review
I’m finishing up my travels pretty early this year. Unless something comes up last minute, I doubt I’ll be flying anywhere till January. Nonetheless it has been one heck of a year. In terms of travel it has been my busiest yet. If my math is right I flew around 256,000 “butt in seat” miles and about 220 segments this year....
Great Mileage Expiration Policy Reference
The Global Traveller offers a pretty extensive review of airline mileage expiration policies . Like Kiwi Flyer, I was perplexed reading the February Inside Flyer cover story on mileage expiration to read that Singapore miles expire after 36 months of account activity. : KrisFlyer accounts which have activity are valid for 36 months from the end of...

The mileage run thought process
It has been over a month now since I’ve stepped on a plane for no other reason than to accumulate airline miles. I’ve been traveling quite a bit in the past month, (London, San Fran, etc.), but all with something to do on the other end. And oddly enough, I haven’t even thought about booking a mileage run. Economics aside (and mileage...
